So you love to play metal. As a fellow metalhead who’s been rocking out since a young teen, I don’t blame you! With the crazy intricate solos and heavy booming rhythms what’s not to love! Well, to play proper metal guitar you need to get yourself the right strings. Guitar strings for metal need to be a heavier gauge to help deliver that really thick heavy sound. They also need to retain the right tension when you tune down.
Sure having looser strings makes fretting easier so can speed up your playing dramatically but it comes at a cost. Loose strings cause you to lose sustain in your playing, they can cause fret buzz on your guitar and they can fall out of tune easier. This is why you’ll want to stick with a heavier gauge.
But a heavier gauge makes your playing a bit harder and slower, right? And more than a few metal guitarists love speeding around the top-end for solo’s, shredding at speeds that would leave an amateur with fingers like confetti. This is where the heavy bottom skinny top comes in. Having a heavy bottom will allow you to have punchy rhythm while having a light enough top to tear up the fretboard while soloing.
Which leaves us with two options, go all heavy and accept that you might not be able to play as fast in solos and that bending will be harder. Or you can go heavy bottom and light/medium top, so can still play down low thrashing out disgustingly heavy metal riffs while playing lightning fast solos that would make Michael Romeo weep. Now there’s no one size fits all so I’ve picked out the three best guitar strings for metal.

The D’Addario NYXL Strings are another to fall under the category of premium guitar strings. Similar to the Ernie Ball Cobalt strings that were previously reviewed, however, the NYXL’s have gone above and beyond the Ernie balls and provided a premium value product!
There was a huge marketing campaign that came alongside these strings, advertising greater tuning stability, the ability to strum harder and bend further without the string breaking and greater magnetic properties which result in higher output and midrange for more presence and crunch in the sound.Read more: D’Addario NYXL Strings Review
The Ernie Ball Cobalt Strings were created with a lot of hype around them. You can see it on their page on Amazon, graphs comparing the output and frequency response of cobalt over nickel or stainless steel. They talk about how they own the patent to the first and only Cobalt string. They also talk about the various artists who use them where they misspelled Jeff Loomis’s name wrong. Honestly! Coming in at 2.5mm the Dragon’s heart Pick is A LOT thicker than most conventional picks but it’s specially designed beveled edge makes it play like a thinner pick with the control of a thicker pick. I didn’t think a pick could influence your playing so much but I was wrong, the Dragon’s Heart Pick allows you effortless speed and precision in your playing.
The Dragon’s Heart Pick started with humble beginnings. Founder Corey Bell is a long time player of guitar and after finishing his military career he began tinkering with producing his own guitars and accessories. Whilst doing so he realized he had an affinity for doing so and managed to produce the stunning piece of equipment that is the Dragon’s Heart Pick.
I am in love.
This Michael Kelly 8 string inspired by the 50s telecaster is absolute gold. It is such a unique looking guitar. Most 7 and 8 strings tend to be black with a polished sleek finish, and don’t get me wrong that does look great but to see such an original design for an 8 string is really refreshing. I mean look at it! Or check it out here on amazon!

It is just a gorgeous piece of equipment. The flame effect body with the signature telecaster pickguard, beautiful. I’m just going to let you look at it some more before I get down to the nitty-gritty of why you need to buy this guitar.Read more: Michael Kelly cc53 8 String – Review
